New Orleans, New Things Happening.

Wednesday, March 4th, 2009

It has been some time since I’ve been able to get to this, for a good reason.  Multiple good reasons, actually.  Since last post, I have gotten a job, moved to New Orleans, and had another kid.

In August of last year I answered a craigslist post for a job with a web development company in New Orleans.  I heard back almost immediately, and soon after got the job.  I now work for Fusionbox in an office in the French quarter.  Fusionbox is a Denver web design company that just last year opened an office in New Orleans; I was the first employee!  I do updates for existing sites, build out and do bug work for new sites, and even do a little bit of design.

This job has given me (besides a paycheck!) a chance to learn Javascript and PHP better, because I have to deal with it on a regular basis.  Even though  the company has other people who do Javascript and PHP, I have been able to play around with it enough to get a much better grasp on it.  We often use the jQuery Javascript library, which I have used to make slideshows and clever animated mock-ups.

It’s Over, Man!

Monday, May 12th, 2008

Well, that’s it.  I was graduated from college Saturday, May 10th.  I made it through, and even though I learned a lot, it isn’t nearly enough.  Currently I’m working on an author’s website, as well as my own.  If anyone has been to my site, they would have seen a placeholder Flash animation that, although fun, does not contain any content.  Soon an all new site will be up that has my portfolio, resume, that kind of stuff.  You’ve been warned.

Bored of the Web?

Monday, March 3rd, 2008

Lately I’ve been very disenchanted with the World Wide Web. Although web design is my long-standing number one career choice, sometimes I’m really disappointed in the Web. Firstly, the Web is a huge place that is mostly full of junk. The percentage of useful information on the Web is very low. The percentage of well-designed sites is very low. The percentage of useful information on well-designed sites is very, very low. Browsing the Web is somewhat of a chore now; at the same time I find it hard to get away from the Web with which I have spent so much time with and come to rely on so much. (more…)

Starting an Internship

Sunday, February 17th, 2008

I have started my internship now; I am interning with the webmaster at the public library here. One of the main reasons I chose the library was because I would get paid for it, but I’m really glad I did. As things are going, it’s going to work out very well. (more…)

It’s still 2008?

Friday, January 11th, 2008

Every new year I hear a lot of people say “I can’t believe it’s already 2008!” or whatever year it happens to be. However, I have a different perspective on each new year. For some reason, around Q4 of every year, (October-December) I start to think of the year as being the next year. (more…)

Finishing up the Semester

As far as this semester goes, I am on my last project for every class. I am definitely looking forward to the Christmas break, during which I will travel with my wife and work for actual money. As far as the projects go: (more…)

Christmas Art Sale

Monday, December 3rd, 2007

Since Coz apparently has nothing to do besides read my blog, this one’s just for him.  We had our annual Christmas Art Sale here at the school gallery this weekend. The word Christmas refers to the time of year rather than the type of art found there. The students and faculty put any work they want to in it for what ever price they want to. Then people come and buy a few pots. We still put other stuff in. Following is an excerpt from the show: (more…)

Paper Guillotine

The image needs no explanation.  I was inspired while watching a friend aggressively divide sheets of paper, along with the memory of slicing part of my finger off with this same device.
